    Course Syllabus 2023-2024 

     

    Course Description  

    Learning Strategies is an elective course for students who are working towards a state high school diploma and have an IEP. This course is designed to develop and strengthen skills for positive academic and functional performance and support acquisition of skills to meet post-secondary goals. Students will receive direct instruction utilizing a model that includes one-to-one, small group, whole group, and computer-assisted instruction. Students will be served in multiple areas, determined by baseline data, to include math, reading, organization, and study skills to prepare them for college, technical school, and the work force.

     

    Student Outcomes 

    • Students will determine their strengths, weaknesses, interests, and skills to establish career and/or post-secondary educational goals. 
    • Students will learn to advocate for themselves through better understanding of their IEP and how to use their accommodations to most effectively enhance their academic performance. 
    • Students will gain skills to enhance their learning in general education classes.  
    • Students will research colleges, technical schools, and other post-secondary options. 
    • Students will learn how to prepare for state, district, and standardized assessments through the acquisition of study skills and practice assessments. 

    Instruction 

    The instructional model is a daily plan that allows students to benefit from teacher-directed instruction, technology, and one-to-one, small group, and independent practice. Our primary technology is the usage of the IXL computer program. The IXL program includes elementary, middle, and high school curriculum, individualized guidance, and real-time analytics. 

     

    Course Assessment Plan 

    Work and activities that increase their skills and performance in core classes. Practicing, strengthening, and monitoring reading and math skills. Students will complete several diagnostics but the primary one utilized is the IXL diagnostic. After the diagnostic has been completed, students need to complete 30 questions weekly following their IXL skill plan

    Classroom Procedures & Expectations 

    The overarching expectation in this class is RESPECT: respect for yourself, other students, the teacher, and any guests that may enter our class.

    1. Be kind and helpful to classmates. Do not make fun of others, use derogatory names, or bully in any form. 
    1. No profanity 
    1. Clean your area before you leave. Throw away trash, wipe desks etc. 
    1. While others are working, do not talk loudly, play music, or disrupt the class.

    Laptop that is charged and headphones that work with the school assigned laptop.
